The origins of patriarchy can be traced back to the beginnings of philosophical, not to mention religious, thought, and the questioning of this notion has been gaining momentum throughout the world in recent years. One academic reflection of this movement is the critical re-reading of the classics of philosophy in the light of the advance of feminisms and gender considerations. Juliana Udi provides in her introduction to Patriarca an exhaustive analysis of a classic of political philosophy followed by an elegant and carefully annotated translation. In doing so, she attempts a return to the modern sources of political patriarchy in order to identify its theoretical foundations and historical context, but also to discuss from a gender perspective its social persistence today.
