Conjectures about the Relationship of Reason and Reality in the Philosophy of Xavier Zubiri

Context: The relationship between thought and being is one of the longest debates in Western philosophy. In this sense, the philosophy of Xavier Zubiri introduces a series of modulations that reshape that tension, particularly through his latest work on sentient intelligence. The main objective of this article is to rework —and thereby elucidate— this relationship through recent hermeneutical approaches to Zubiri’s thought.
Methodology: This paper consists of an interpretation of the main theoretical core on the aforementioned theme, focusing, on the one hand, on the status of the reason in relation to intelligence, which is understood as a primordial installation in reality. On the other hand, it is necessary to examine the modifications Zubiri proposes to rethink the concept of reality. From this basis, we explore the variations that this entails for rationality and its access to metaphysically conceived reality.
Conclusions: First, we conjecture that the approach developed in Zubiri’s philosophy allows a departure from both Kantian and Hegelian positions on reason. Furthermore, it opens the possibility of rethinking the ontological status of reason. Second, reality need not be conceived as a single metaphysical ground, but rather as an open-ended process of structuring.
