On one hand, this letter that Kant wrote on February 21, 1770 to his friend Marcus Herz is famous, maybe it is the only worthy document giving information about a decade before criticism arrives—a period during which Kant stopped publishing. This period goes from 1770, year of

De mundi sensibilis atque intelligibilis forma et principiis: Dissertatio to 1781, Critique of pure reason ’s first edition. On the other hand, Kant’s letter is still ambiguous. Its interpreters have not come yet to an agreement about its ultimate meaning. I argue that the letter to Herz is a very good example of Kant’s hybrid thinking at that historical period. Kant’s thinking, maybe without a major influence from skepticism, is still struggling between critical anticipations and mere dogmatic repetitions.
